• CFMS Governance Structure

    Overall Structure of the CFMS

The CFMS represents over 9,000 medical students across 15 Canadian medical schools, connecting future physicians from coast to coast. If you're a student at a CFMS-member school, you’re automatically part of the CFMS!

As a member, you can run for leadership roles, join committees, and shape the future of medical education. Stay informed through our monthly newsletter for application deadlines. You’re also invited to our two annual meetings—the Annual General Meeting (AGM) in the fall and the Spring General Meeting (SGM), now part of the Canadian Medical Student Conference (CMSC). Need support to attend? Apply for the Travel Equity Fund!

    CFMS Membership

Each medical student society is represented by two CFMS Representatives who attend the AGM and SGM, stay connected year-round, and help bridge communication between students and the CFMS Board.

Our Round Tables bring together student leaders from across the country, offering diverse perspectives and shaping CFMS initiatives through broad consultation.

Decisions are made by vote at general meetings—each member school gets three votes, and each Board member gets one. Schools often send additional representatives to actively participate in discussions and initiatives.

The Governance Committee, a skill-based group with members from the Board, President’s Roundtable, and general membership, ensures that CFMS policies align with our mission, vision, and strategic goals.

    Board Structure

The CFMS Board is made up of the President, Past-President, four Directors, multiple Vice Presidents, and six Regional Directors, all serving one-year terms. The Board also appoints National Officers who lead committees and drive key initiatives.

Board elections take place during a virtual Special General Meeting in May, with new members starting July 1st—ensuring a smooth transition.

Supporting the Board is a dedicated Ottawa-based team including an Executive Director, Communications Coordinator, and Administrative Coordinator, who handle daily operations and keep CFMS running smoothly.
