• CFMS Grants and Funds

  • CFMS-MDFM Travel Equity Fund

Each year the CFMS and MD Financial Management allocate funds to provide financial assistance for CFMS member medical students who wish to attend our General Meetings and annual events.

    What is TEF?

The Travel Equity Fund (TEF) was created by CFMS and MDFM to reduce financial barriers for students attending CFMS events like: a) AGM (Annual General Meeting), b) National Day of Action (NDoA), c) Canadian Medical Student Conference (CMSC), d) Medical Education Day of Action (MeDOA)

    Why it matters:

Not all travel costs are equal. Students coming from rural, remote, or geographically distant regions often face higher expenses. TEF aims to make participation more equitable and inclusive, no matter where you study.

    What can TEF cover?

TEF reimburses a portion of travel-related expenses:

    • Air- or train fare
      • Tickets must be booked at least 5 weeks before the event. Exceptions can be requested through email with proof that permission for time off was sent in more than 5 weeks before the event.
      • Only Basic or Standard tickets are included. Seat selection and checked bags are excluded. (See CFMS Travel Policy.)
      • Excessively more expensive fares may be reduced to the level of other requests received departing from the same airport. CFMS Travel Policy states to look for and book the cheapest option available
      • Payments done in points cannot be reimbursed
    • Travel by car or bus
      • Students who have to travel from one city to another to reach the airport can include this travel in their TEF reimbursement request.
      • The travel by car cannot be more expensive than travel by plane or train. (See CFMS Travel Policy.)

Students receiving partial Medical Student Society or other funding are still eligible as long as they are transparent about it in their application.

CFMS will be piloting alternative TEF approaches which may include more expenses than the ones mentioned above. Such a pilot will specify what will be included.

    How are reimbursements calculated?

Funding depends on a) number of applicants per event, b) TEF budget set for an event, c) travel distances and declared needs.

    • Reimbursement request must be received by CFMS within 14 days after the event
    • Travel expenses must adhere to the CFMS Travel Policy which can be found here
    • Ticket fares from the same airport will be compared. Outliers may be adjusted.
    • Based on the TEF funding available for the event and the TEF reimbursement requests received a "Cost to Person" will be calculated. Expenses above this amount will be reimbursed.
    • The reimbursement will need to be equal to or more than $100.

    How to apply?

    1. Opt-in for the CFMS-MDFM Travel Equity Fund during registration of CFMS event
    2. Ensure you book economy travel and keep receipts
    3. Sent in your reimbursement request

    CFMS-MDFM TEF policy review

The CFMS Governance Committee 2024-2025 did a TEF policy review at the request of the CFMS Board, the CFMS Office, and the CFMS Membership. This resulted in a "Review of Travel Equity Fund (TEF) Policy" report. This report includes recommendations based on their findings. These findings will be implemented as much as possible, the first being this updated TEF webpage. If you have recommendations for changes on this page in an effort to make things more clear for fellow students, please email Stephanie Houwer, the CFMS Administrative Coordinator through administrative@cfms.org. You can also email her with additional questions.

Another recommendation in the report is the piloting of alternative TEF approaches. This will be taking place on an event basis. Please check an event's webpage on this website or the registration page for any changes pertaining to the TEF eligibility or calculation for that event.

Note: Exception requests can be emailed to administrative@cfms.org and will be considered by the CFMS Executive Board.

Want to help improve the TEF?

Your feedback will help us improve the Travel Equity Fund (TEF) to better serve the needs of medical students across Canada. Any CFMS Member can fill out this survey, regardless if you have used it before or not: TEF Feedback Form

This form will remain open and will be checked a month after each TEF deadline. Next responses review deadline (following CFMS AGM 2025) is November 4th, 2025.

  • CFMS-CMA Building Leaders Conference Fund

    Support to experience CMA meetings

    What is BLCF?

The Building Leaders Conference Fund 2526 is inspired by the previously successful Building Leaders Conference Fund that was established in 2023 to support medical student attendance and participation at conferences. This fund was made possible through a generous grant from the Canadian Medical Association (CMA).

The 25/26 funding is meant to enhance medical student accessibility to, and engagement with CMA's:

Note: Applications are currently on hold until more funding becomes available

    Can I apply?

In order to be considered, you must be:

    • A current CFMS member
    • Currently enrolled, actively studying and in good standing at a Canadian medical school at the time of the funding application and time of the conference - for final year medical students the conference must occur before July 1, 2025.

Selected participants will be expected to write a brief (1-2 page) report summarizing their experience to receive their reimbursement.

The highest preference will be given to applicants who may be speaking/presenting.

    How do I apply?

When funding becomes available again, we ask that interested applicants fill out this Google Form, which will then remain active until all funds have been assigned. If you have any questions, please email Stephanie Houwer, CFMS Administrative Coordinator at administrative@cfms.org.

    FAQ

How much money can I get? What is covered?

The portion of the fund awarded to each applicant will be based on the discretion of CFMS. Sign up fees, presenting fees, poster costs, travel (ground and air) and hotel accommodations are all eligible for coverage. The CFMS Travel Policy will apply. Remember, the CFMS operates on a reimbursement model so you must keep your receipts in order to receive a cheque!

When will I be informed if I was chosen?

We will do our best to notify all applicants, successful and not, within 10 business days.

Can I submit more than once?

You can only submit each conference once, but you are welcome to submit more than one conference!

Can I apply as an MD/PhD Student?

Yes, MD/PhD students are eligible to apply, even if you are currently completing your PhD years.

Can I apply during a gap year?

It depends. You must be an enrolled and active student at the time of the funding application and the time of the conference. For example, if you are an unmatched student completing a fifth year, you are eligible during the fifth year. If you are currently on a break from your medical studies, you would not be eligible.

  • CFMS Student Initiative Grant

    Supporting CFMS members' Initiatives

    What is the "SIG"

CFMS Student Initiative Grants Program was established in 2007 to provide support and funding to medical student initiatives. The fund was established in response to the increasing number of medical student-run initiatives and the need for official and financial support from our national student organization.

Many successful projects have benefitted from direct CFMS funding including charitable, educational, and social events all organized by medical students. The goal is to assist students in realizing events or initiatives that promote interactions between CFMS students and member schools.

For the SIG 2024-2025 cycle, CFMS received 92 applications of which 14 initiatives have received an offer. If your initiative wasn't selected during this cycle, please try again for the SIG 2025-2026 applications cycle. SIG 2025-2026 applications will open up in December 2025.

    How does it work

    Brief Project guidelines:

    • Student Initiative Grant funding is intended to help local and provincial start-up projects with initial funding to contribute to their long-term sustainability.
    • Projects will NOT be considered if they have been recipients of CFMS Student Initiative Grants in the past 3 years
    • IMPORTANT NOTE: There are two categories of funding available.
      • Tier 1 SIG funding is available for medium to large-scale initiatives
      • Tier 2 SIG funding is available for small- to medium-scale initiatives
      • The maximum amount of funding that may be requested via a CFMS SIG is $3,000.00 for Tier 1 and $1,500.00 for Tier 2.
    • Projects will have the option to apply for one of the two tiers of fundings. Please do not increase your budget to ask for the maximum, as we wish to fund as many projects as possible, however for projects with a larger budget, please take note of this limit and look for funding from other sources such that you are able to complete your project with only partial funding from the CFMS.
    • The Student Initiative Grants are NOT meant to fund academic research or travel funding to conferences for individual medical students

For the complete information about the grants and how your application will be scored, please see the program guideline 25/26.

    How to apply
