Match Support
Pre-Interview
- CFMS Matchbook: Annual publication designed to educate medical students about the Match and assist with career planning. Outlines major deadlines, details steps involved and provides advice/tips. New 2024 Matchbook coming soon!!
- onboardMD: Online platform that provides resources, information, tips and overall support for medical students from first year up to final year.
- MDFM “Ask Me Anything…”: Interview series hosted by MD Financial Management with current residents who recently participated in the residency match process that help answer common questions/concerns and provide tips/advice for students entering the match process.
- MatchStats: Resource created by UofT MedSoc in collaboration with CFMS meant to aid medical students in interpreting the electives and match statistics.
- CaRMS Interview Experiences data: Access 10 years of data regarding interview attendance, costs and schedules.
Interview
- CMA Mock Interviews: Mock interview sessions organized by the CMA where current residents help prepare medical students for interviews by simulating interview scenarios and providing feedback.
- Interview Preparation Guide: Online resources for interview tips/strategies such as practice interview questions, what to expect at interviews and how to pose questions at end of interview.
Post-Interview
- Couples Match Rank Order List Tool: Online tool to help students that are couples matching to create their rank order list with the ability to input specialties, locations and preferences.
- CFMS Unmatched Peer Mentorship Network: This is a forum where you can make an anonymous account and receive support from previously unmatched students. You may ask questions about the match process, what resources are available, your options, or anything else. You may also chat with any of the available mentors for one-on-one mentorship and peer support. The page is restricted to CFMS moderators, uCMG mentors, and current uCMG students to ensure your privacy and comfort levels are always maintained. - 2nd Iteration Match Stipend*: The CFMS is excited to offer all unmatched members $150 to support applying to the second iteration of the R-1 match. The reimbursement form is available here. The reimbursement form must be completed and submitted to administrative@cfms.org from your school email account by May 31th, 2024.
- CFMS Transition to Residency Guide: Guide to help students entering residency with information regarding financial planning, career decisions and resources available to residents.
- CFMS Unmatched Grad Mentorship Program: If you are an unmatched grad, you can reach out to the Director of Education or Education Associate associateeducation@cfms.org to be paired with a buddy/mentor who has been unmatched in a previous year. We will do our best to pair students with mentors who have similar interests or schools. Our Quebec Regional Director will aid in translation if needed. We will all maintain confidentiality and protect your personal information.
- Wellness Supports: We encourage all learners to be in close contact with their Student Affairs offices for comprehensive support during this process. The Canadian Medical Association provides a landing page with links to National HelpLines, as well as Provincial and Territorial Physician Support Services that are freely available to medical students 24/7. SafeSpaces Peer Support Session for Unmatched Students (TBD): In the past, we have partnered with the CMA to host a psychiatrist-moderated peer support session for our unmatched students to help with connecting students with this experience. This is open only to unmatched Canadian Medical Graduates from the 2024 match cycle, and can be participated in anonymously if that is preferred. The SafeSpaces team is in the process of working with the CMA to plan for this years’ session, and we will let you know as soon as we know more. For more information, contact studentaffairs@cfms.org

Matchbook
The Matchbook is a joint initiative of the CFMS and CaRMS designed to educate medical students about the Match and assist with career planning. For complete information on the CaRMS Match, visit the CaRMS website.
What's in the Matchbook?
The Matchbook, first created in 2008 and currently at its 12th edition, intends to (1) provide an introduction to the Canadian residency match process, (2) present an overview of the major steps involved, and (3) aid Canadian medical students at various stages of training in planning their strategy for matching in their preferred programs.

Unmatched Support
If you did not match and are a CFMS member, we have listed some steps for you to consider. Your Student Affairs and Undergraduate Medical Education offices have been made aware of these supports as well:
1) CFMS Unmatched Peer Mentorship Network: If you wish to be put in touch with a previously unmatched student mentor for one-on-one mentorship and peer support, you may contact the CFMS Director of Education at education@cfms.org or Education Dyad at educationdyad@cfms.org. Your confidentiality will be respected.
2) CFMS Matchbook: The 2021-2022 Matchbook is accessible to CFMS members via our website and can be accessed here. It is updated with advice for the unmatched student. More specifically, Section 3.6 “The Unmatched Scenario” is a detailed toolkit put together by the CFMS Unmatched CMG Task Force which is comprised of previously unmatched students. Stay tuned for the 2023-2024 Matchbook, which will be coming soon!

If you are not matched after the second iteration, you are not alone. There are many resources to help you as you continue along your journey to being a successful physician.
Match Day can bring complicated emotions and that is normal, regardless of your match status. If you need support, reach out to your loved ones, your student affairs office, or provincial medical association physician support service and know that you are not alone, today or ever.
