About the CFMS
The CFMS is an organization representing over 8,000 medical students from 15 Canadian medical student societies from coast to coast. We represent medical students to the public, to the federal government, and to national and international medical organizations.The Canadian Federation of Medical Students condemns, in the strongest possible terms, the terrorist attacks by Hamas and the human rights atrocities unfolding over this past week. We are heartbroken by the outbreak of brutal warfare in Israel and Palestine, and mourn for the tragic loss of life within the region both this week and in decades past. We firmly oppose all violence against civilians, throughout Palestine, Israel, and abroad, and stand firmly on the side of humanitarianism.
We extend our deepest condolences to everyone impacted by these tragedies and recognize that there are Canadian medical students with family, friends, and peers personally affected by these events. Your well-being is our utmost concern. We acknowledge that news of these attacks and the escalation of violence can have a profound and deeply personal impact on many people’s wellbeing and sense of safety. We have thus provided a list of resources available for individuals who need immediate support and will work to update this list as we become aware of additional resources.
We strongly condemn and have zero tolerance for any form of Antisemitism, Islamophobia, bigotry, hate, or violence within our communities. We urge everyone to lean into the best traits embodied by our profession during these difficult times. Be sensitive to what others are grappling with, which may not be directly expressed. Look out for each other and treat each other with compassion and understanding. Everyone will be affected differently based on their lived experiences, and it is up to us to create a safe, compassionate, and inclusive environment.
