Canadian Federation of Medical Students Update on Anti-Racism Efforts
January 20, 2021

As mentioned in our statement on January 14th, we are committed to advancing anti-racism efforts as well as equity, diversity, and inclusivity to create safe spaces for all medical students. An independent, trauma-informed, and culturally safe investigation has been started to encompass the experiences and concerns raised by Yotakahron Jonathan and Santanna Hernandez. We will ensure that a report is released to our membership upon completion of the investigation to ensure accountability for the organization. We expect the report will include recommendations for the organization as well as the individuals involved and commit to releasing an action plan to address the recommendations within 30 days of the report’s release.

We have created a page on our website outlining our immediate plans as it relates to anti-racism as well as equity, diversity, and inclusivity. This includes creating a Working Group composed of Indigenous faculty, community members, and medical students to ensure that Indigenous perspectives are centred in the continued work of the CFMS as we work to decolonize the organization. We are committed to reflecting and educating ourselves in partnership with our members so that we may co-create a safe CFMS for all. We are open to any and all feedback to support our efforts and will be engaging our membership in town halls in the coming months.
