About the CFMSThe CFMS is an organization representing over 8,000 medical students from 15 Canadian medical student societies from coast to coast. We represent medical students to the public, to the federal government, and to national and international medical organizations.
Rallying together to save lives
CFMS has a long-standing history of giving blood and saving lives. As future doctors, we appreciate how critical it is that blood products are available for patients at any given time. We’re pleased to do our part to help through a national partnership with Canadian Blood Services.
As a Partner for Life organization, we pledge an annual goal for the number of blood donations that we will strive to contribute from CFMS members, family and friends. In 2015, we’re aiming for at least 1,250 donations.
To help achieve our goal, we run the annual Phlebotomy Bowl – a friendly competition between schools to contribute the most blood donations per capita and the most first-time blood donors. This year’s challenge runs September 1, 2015 – February 29, 2016.
Here’s how you can help:
- Download the GiveBlood App, visit to find your nearest blood donor clinic and book your appointment to donate. Giving blood takes about an hour and you can donate every 56 days.
- Visit and register with your school’s Partner ID number. You need to register so your donation counts towards our annual goal and your school’s ranking in the Phlebotomy Bowl. Once you register, your past and future donations will automatically count towards CFMS.

Questions about eligibility to donate?
Visit www.blood.ca/eligibility or call 1-888-2-DONATE and ask to speak with a Nurse. If you can’t donate yourself, you can still participate! Recruit another donor to give blood on your behalf (they can register per above), or consider volunteering to help spearhead our partnership with Canadian Blood Services at your campus. Some people who are ineligible to give blood are still eligible to join OneMatch and become a potential stem cell donor.
The OneMatch Stem Cell and Marrow Network matches volunteer donors to patients who need stem cell transplants. Stem cells are used to treat more than 80 blood-related diseases and disorders – and less than 25 per cent of patients who need transplants will find a match in their family. The rest rely on those who have volunteered to donate stem cells to anyone in need. You may be eligible to join if you are between 17 and 35 years old and meet certain health criteria. There is an immediate need for ethnic males aged 17 – 35. Learn more at www.onematch.ca.
