About the CFMS
The CFMS is an organization representing over 8,000 medical students from 15 Canadian medical student societies from coast to coast. We represent medical students to the public, to the federal government, and to national and international medical organizations.Hi !
My name is Geordie Maguire, a 3rd year student at the Queen’s University School of Medicine.
I grew up in Winnipeg and true to our license plate, “Friendly Manitoba” I’ve always sought to find the positives in every situation. In the summer of 2022, this was tested to an extreme when I was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumour. Following a difficult 6-weeks of treatment, and as my classmates were heading into the hospital for clerkship, I (with help) began to plan the Queen’s Med Fights Cancer charity hockey game.
In close collaboration with my classmates, faculty and hundreds of volunteers we raised over $104,000 for the Brain Tumour Foundation of Canada. An organization focused on providing information and support, while contributing to brain cancer research for patients like myself. This event brought our community together to rally behind an important cause and allowed us to connect with people who are passionate about helping those going through difficult times.
To this year’s applicant, my advice is to discover an initiative you are genuinely passionate about and surround yourself with an engaged and committed team. I’m profoundly grateful to everyone who contributed to our project and I am excited to witness the positive impact your initiatives will have!

The primary goal of the CFMS-CPAMD Humanitarian Award is to encourage the development of innovative humanitarian initiatives dedicated towards creating change. CFMS and CPAMD want to recognize a medical student who is going above and beyond as an aspiring medical professional exemplifying leadership.
