Dear New Resident Physician:

Welcome to residency! Congratulations on completing medical school and on having completed or soon to complete the LMCC Part 1! As a new resident physician, you will be a CAIR member and you join 7,500 other residents across Canada. We are looking forward to having you with us on the front lines of health care. The Canadian Association of Internes and Residents (CAIR) is your national body, run by residents who work on your behalf to ensure that residents are recognized on the national stage. CAIR works in concert with your provincial housestaff association (PHO) to achieve consensus on policy and advocacy issues of national interest such as medical education, professionalism and resident wellbeing with the goal of delivering improvements to the lives of residents. CAIR also works on your behalf with other national health organizations such as the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, the College of Family Physicians of Canada and the Canadian Medical Association to continuously improve medical education and patient care, and to explore new approaches to the delivery of health care in Canada.

As a member-driven organization, CAIR relies on resident representatives to achieve its mandate. If you have an interest in medical education, federal politics, or resident wellbeing and wish to contribute to the service of your colleagues, then I urge you to consider active involvement in CAIR. There are opportunities for residents of all backgrounds to serve in various capacities: 
• As a Member of CAIR’s Board of Directors
• As a Member of one of CAIR’s Management Committees
• As a CAIR liaison representative on one of many high level national stakeholder committees 

Working with CAIR allows you to actively participate in discussions and in making decisions concerning major medical issues while giving you an opportunity to represent the interests of residents across Canada and gain valuable professional experience. We will soon be seeking representatives for the 2009-2010 Academic Year. An outline of the CAIR Governance structure, the roles of Board Members, a description of committees and a list of current Liaison Positions are posted on our website (www.cair.ca).
