Dear Medical Students,

It is my pleasure to announce that nominations are now open for the position of President-Elect of the Canadian Federation of Medical Students (CFMS). The CFMS is the national organization that represents the medical students of Canada.  Do you have what it takes to lead the CFMS in the coming two years? Below you will find a detailed description of this position, which is open to all members of CFMS.

Nominations Process:
Interested individuals must forward their names and full contact information by email to Shaheed Merani, Past President, at nom2009@cfms.org or through the contact form below by 7:00 pm EST on Friday May 1, 2009. Nominations will close strictly at this time.  Any student at any member medical school may run.

Election Process:
The election will take place at the CFMS Biannual General Meeting (BAGM) which will be held May 1-2, 2009, at the Westin Edmonton in Edmonton, AB.  Votes will be cast by medical student society representatives and members of the Federation's executive, as detailed in the organization's bylaws.  Candidates will be expected to deliver a short speech to the voters, either in person, by proxy or by electronic means. Designated time constraints must be followed.  You must notify Shaheed Merani two weeks prior to the meeting if you wish to deliver a speech by alternative means.

Position Description: President-elect, Canadian Federation of Medical Students

The President-elect is named at the Biannual General Meeting (CFMS BAGM) and will assume the role of President immediately following the general elections at the CFMS Annual General Meeting that will take place September 25-27, 2009 in Thunder Bay, ON. The President-elect is a member of the CFMS executive and is responsible for assisting the president while becoming familiar with the roles and duties of this position between May and September.  Upon assuming the position as President, the incumbent will be responsible for setting the vision and course for the CFMS in the coming year.  Many Presidents have had experience with the CFMS (though not required) and should have detailed knowledge of the structure and work of the organization. In addition to setting the priorities and strategic direction, the President acts as the primary contact on key issues for students, external organizations, and the media. The President will attend many external meetings as representative of Canadian medical students and will travel an average of two weekends per month for the duration of the 1-year term.  Though not exhaustive, major commitments include representing students at the CMA Board of Directors, CaRMS Board of Directors, as representative on the Canadian Medical Forum, and a multitude of taskforces and subcommittees. S/he will be asked to present at different meetings and speak with media about issues affecting medical students.

The President leads the Executive team and facilitates the priorities of the organization are met. Time on email and phone can exceed 3 hours per day during busy periods. Presidential responsibilit ies also include liaising with the office staff person on a daily basis. The position of President-elect is of a four month duration and it rolls into the position of President for one year. Following the end of her/his term, the president assumes the official role of Past President.
